So.
The ocean is pretty cold, it turns out. Our group took part in the Polar Bear Dip today. We were told it was a pretty big event in Inverness. It happens on the
beach just behind our house and down the street a ways. It was a bit of a frightening sign to us when we passed a few ponds near our house in the van on the way and they were almost
completely frozen over. Uh oh. When we got there, there were cars filling up the whole parking was full of cars and we figured the whole town turned up to swim. Turns out the Polar Bear Dip is considered more of a spectator sport for much of the town... A lot of people were just there to watch us run like mad fools into freezing cold water. The whole thing, in the end, happened incredibly fast and wasn't even as cold as we expected. We were standing on the shore in shorts (and tank tops for the girls), and then all of a sudden everyone was screaming and running into the ocean. I hope no one was watching me, specifically, at this moment, since I remember running out with salt water in my eyes and mouth, half blind and waving my arms in front of me like a madwoman. Fun. It was really a lot of fun, though, and most of us weren't even that cold. Only our feet had instantly transformed into blocks of ice since we wore shoes in the water, so as soon as we were out of the water, we booted it outta there and back to the van to get our shoes off. Our warming-up techniques consisted of blankets in the car and then a nice, warm, mass shower (with clothes on) - 5 of us squished in our little shower definitely just added to the experience. All in all it was a pretty good time... and the fun-ness (sorry about that not being a word) was more than worth the nervousness I experienced beforehand.
Pictures to go up later....

Such an interesting story of your Polar Bear Swim. I'll bet the Inverness residents enjoyed seeing the Katimavik group jump into the ocean! Way to go, Amanda! I've always wanted to do that, but never had the nerve. (Not sure how you would all fit into the shower together, though!) Happy New Year to you, too!
THat sounds like a great adventure. I'm glad that you have had that experience - one that I have NEVER wanted to do. Mom, on the other hand, is probably jealous and might just set up her own dip, just for her. You're doing pretty well so far on the updates, keep it up;)
